A Place of Refuge and Peace

Waegwan Abbey was established by monks of the German Order of St. Benedict, who sought refuge in South Korea after fleeing religious persecution — following the closure of the Abbey of the Holy Cross at Yenki in Manchuria, and of Tokwon Abbey in North Korea, around the time of the Korean War. In the Benedictine spirit of ora et labora (“pray and work”), the monks here have long dedicated themselves to prayer, evangelization, and social work — publishing and printing at Bundo Book, running farms, and supporting education in the community. The site is also currently used by the local Filipino Catholic community for Mass, and is being registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage of South Korea.
